Defeating Depression
Depression is a cruel and monstrous killer. It is a Predator that torments many lives indiscriminately. The word of God is the only sure cure for depression. Are you frustrated with life? Do you feel like committing suicide? Do not let the enemy cheat you out of Gods best. Get Godly counsel now. Life is beautiful. You can enjoy life again.
Depression is a cruel predator unleashed from the belly of darkness with the heinous task of pilfering the joy, peace, strength, health and life of every human being. It is a monstrous force on a merciless mission to steal, to kill and to destroy mankind. It is no respecter of persons. It does not discriminate between rich or poor, male or female, young or old. It torments even the very young with seemingly little or no obligations to worry about as well as the adult.Depression involves an emotional state of mind, usually a serious mood disorder caused by profound sorrow, sadness, frustration and a sense of hopelessness over a period of time which affects peoples disposition and impedes their ability to enjoy every day life. It brings about loss of energy as it weakens the human immune system and causes physical deterioration which often triggers premature death. It is a state of mental or psychological disorder of a person or people.
There are numerous causes of depression which invariably affects the human nervous system and constitutes a health hazard. For example, physical or mental stress, trauma caused by death of loved ones, business turbulence and failure, financial debts, distress in relationships, financial lack, obesity, joblessness, barrenness, miscarriages, hopelessness, fear of the unknown, misfortune, sickness such as HIV/AIDS and cancer; anxiety, conflict, anticipation of danger, and others. Some people get depressed when they get their desired breakthroughs such as a new job, promotion at work or when they get newly married. Does that surprise you? Haven’t you heard of multi-millionaires who, metaphorically speaking, have the world at their feet but still commit suicide? I read the sad story of a 55 year old successful Emmy Award winning actor who committed suicide in his home in the US early July 2006, through a gun shot to his head. Depression is a dreadful demon that must be defeated. Scores of people are not living to their full potentials and countless others have aborted their own lives as a result of depression which is an elevated form of discouragement.
Loneliness is an invitation for this evil intruder and killer to come visiting. Low self-esteem, pessimism, the use of hard drugs, among others, can set off this predator. Depression is sin. It is ignorance of God’s love and promises. The absence of God in a person’s life can lead to depression. God made man in His own image and breathed into man the breath of life. Man is forever incomplete without his creator. The vacuum created by the absence of God in a human heart cannot be replaced by hard drugs, money, sex or power. Many people live perpetually in a sorry state of depression. Mild or severe, depression is a ruthless killer, a callous looter and a lethal weapon of mass destruction. What do you do when you encounter an armed serial killer who attempts to harm you? You fight to preserve your life with every strength in you, isn’t it? Depression is a dangerous and silent serial killer, a ferocious robber, a brutal terrorist and a dreadful destructive force that is not limited by geographical boundaries or immigration officers. All over the world, this deadly killer, an enemy of God and man, thrives. It is a shrewd and deceptive spirit that lies to many in order to sway them to believe that life has no meaning. It instigates people to give up in life. It spews out poisonous venom of helplessness and hopelessness. Many people undergo diverse kind of therapy with tranquilizing drugs as well as psychotherapy for treatment of depression. Here is the secret to defeating depression: the word of God is the only sure cure against this evil predator. Why suffer unduly from the toxin of depression which manifest through sickness, insomnia, loss of appetite, unhappiness, loss of weight, violent tendencies, rage, frustration, hallucination, irritability, uncertainty, thought burns, miscarriages, suicide tendencies, deep emotional pain and the rest when the promises and principles of God are clearly outlined in the holy Bible at your reach? Life is not meaningless, that’s the lie of the devil. Are you at the lowest point of your life or do you know someone who is? Depression is not part of the human nature. It is a thief that comes only to siphon. Confront this enemy with the most effective weapon in human existence which is the word of God. The word works and cannot fail. These are not mere rhetoric. It wouldn’t cost you much. Get a Bible, study it tenaciously, believe God’s promises and principles therein and you’ll surely step on the head of the dragon called depression.
Justifying one’s state of depression will not move anyone forward in life. A woman married for 18 years without a child after countless effort to have children will have reasons to be depressed. Another who looses her entire three children in an avoidable plane crash has reasons to be depressed. A man whose wife was violently raped and viciously stabbed to death in his presence by some armed youngsters, has reasons to be depressed. Someone who is currently serving a life jail term for murder he never committed also has reasons to be depressed and frustrated with life. Howbeit, the word of God is satiated with numerous reasons why one must never give up because all things are possible to whoever believes.

Whenever you feel depressed, remember that such a feeling is a demonstration of lack of understanding and faith in God’s promises and provisions. It is a graduated level of worry, anxiety and emotional torment. Depression destroys the human soul – Prov. 12:25; it can result in sickness – Lk. 10: 41; it is a sin – Rom. 14: 23; it is no solution to problems – Mtt. 6:25; it is a fruit of darkness contrary to God’s will – Phil. 4: 6 -7.
“Blessed is the man that trust in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is” – Jer. 17: 7-8.
Depression must not be treated with kid’s glove. It often entails self-pity. It is a vote of no confidence in God’s principles and promises such as:
~ “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” – Jn. 14:27;
~ “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in me” – Jn. 14:1;
~ “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you are called in one body” – Col. 3:15;
~ “But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” – Phil. 4:19;
~ “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” – Rm. 8:28;
~ “When you lie down, you shall not be afraid: yea, you shall lie down, and your sleep shall be sweet” – Prov. 3:24;
~ “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you: because he trust in you” – Isa. 26:3;
~ He who dwell in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” – Ps. 91: 1;
~ “Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you” – 1 Pe. 5:7;
~ “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they? “– Mtt. 6:25-26;
~ “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble…..Be still, and know that I am God” – Ps. 46:1 & 10;
~ “When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing” - Ps. 126: 1–2a;
Depression must have no place whatsoever in your life or that of your loved ones. The love and promises of God are trustworthy remedies for depression. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son to die and pay the penalty of the sin of humanity so that whosoever believes in Him can live eternally and victoriously. You will find the words “fear not” over 350 times in the holy Bible. The sovereign rock of ages, the ancient of days and self existing God does not want you tormented by fear, worry or depression. He says you should cast your cares, worries and trials upon Him because He loves you profoundly. Your life does not need to be choked by the thorns of depression.
Many have ruined their destinies because they unwittingly dared to take succor in the power of narcotics instead of the power of God’s word. It is like hopping from the frying pan of depression right into the fire of drug addiction, another vicious destroyer. Drugs cause insanity and health hazards. They increase crime rates as many depressed people who delve into drugs become sadistic rapist, fraudsters, armed robbers and killers who derive utmost pleasure hurting other people. Drugs, just like alcohol, are perilous stimulus.
A young celebrity lady who had a penchant for jewelry had invested incredibly huge sums of money over a period of time amassing gold and diamond jewelry. But it only took a few minutes for armed robbers to carte all away on a certain day. Her world crumbled after the ordeal. She just couldn’t get over the loss of her entire treasure. Depression berthed in her soul and refused to let go of her. She has since vowed never to invest immensely in Jewelry. When you have an account in heaven which is well operated through seeds sown regularly on fertile ground, thieves can never break in there to steal your investments. Invest in advancing God’s Kingdom on earth and God will preserve and defend your earthly belongings. Even if any is taken away, you’ll overtake the robbers and recover your possession through the power of God’s restoration.
Stay away from alcohol and hard drugs that bring about physical and emotional stimulation which can impair sound reasoning and exacerbate the state of depression. These stimulants increase crime rates that affect state and national economies because of the huge cost of maintaining prisoners as well as the cost of court processes, and so on. The word of the living God is the unfailing cure for depression. As you dwell in God’s awesome word, your sorrow will give way for joy, your fears will collapse and faith will rise up in you. The Lord will do great things for you. He will turn your captivity around and you shall reap in joy. Never give up because you shall indeed eat the labor of your hands and be happy. You shall enjoy God’s manifold goodness all the days of your life. Hold on to the word of God with your life and the vessel of sorrow and misfortune confronting you will sink in the sea of life. Trust in the Most High God and surely your state of depression will not only expire, but you will also become highly unattractive to that malicious predator in Jesus Name. Amen!!
